Canters are the main event

Civil engineering and construction group Daniel Contractors has tapped into a new type of vehicle for its water maintenance fleet.

The company has invested in 44 new 7.5-tonne Mitsubishi Fuso Canters tippers, to service its contract for Welsh Water.

Supplied by Enza, Warrington, some are fitted with Lancashire Tippers bodies, while others have split tipping bodies and lockable toolboxes by Stag Commercial Bodies. Some  27 are the subject of a three-year contract-hire deal with vehicle procurement partner, Gullivers; the remaining 17 were bought outright.

The Canters are working on the repair and maintenance of water mains throughout Wales.

Head of Plant & Transport Bob Norris says: “These vehicles are far more modern than those they’ve replaced and are able to carry much heavier loads. Payload was our initial reason for looking at the Canter – we wanted trucks that could take heavier weights while still being manoeuvrable and easy to get into tight-access locations.”

He continues: “The choice came down to the Mitsubishi or one other similar vehicle from a rival Japanese marque. Both ticked most of our boxes but the fact that the Canter is sold and supported through the Mercedes-Benz truck dealer network tipped the balance in its favour.”

He continues: “We’ve dealt with Enza and Mercedes-Benz before – our fleet also includes everything from Sprinter vans to 44-tonne Actros tractor units – and we know that the dealership team will look after us extremely well.”

Daniel Contractors employs over 1,000 people and is a leading supplier in the pipeline, civil engineering and utility construction sectors. Along with sister companies Land and Marine Project Engineering and Plas Gwilym Environmental, it works for local authorities, utility providers, government departments and private industry customers.
